Choosing the Best Running Gloves: Your Complete Buying Guide

No matter what type of runner you are, casual or competitive, gloves are often required to keep your hands warm and protected against some of the elements you’ll encounter while running outside. So whether you’re brand new to running outdoors or you’re a veteran, it’s crucial that you have a quality pair of running gloves in your gear arsenal for the days when you need them and we’ll help you decide which ones are right for you.

How to Choose Winter Running Gloves

The pair that you choose will depend on several factors, including how cold the temperature gets in your neck of the woods, your personal style preferences, and your budget. If you live in a relatively moderate climate where the temperature rarely, if ever, drops below freezing, you can get away with just about any of the gloves on your list. In fact, a lightweight, thin glove is often preferred as they make running easier and faster.

You’ll also want to be conscious of the fact that while it may be cold out, your hands (and the rest of your body) will begin to warm quite quickly as you begin running so it’s important to not overdress for two reasons:

  1. Your hands may begin to overheat, and your hands can sweat. This causes the inside of your gloves to be wet and uncomfortable.
  2. Should your hands get too hot, you’ll likely want to take your gloves off and then you’re stuck with carrying them for the duration of your run.

To combat this, be sure to find a pair that are rated for temperatures in the range that you’ll generally be running in and know that the recommendation for runners is to dress for temperatures that are 20-30 degrees above what they actually are. For example, if it’s 20 degrees outside, you should plan to dress for your run as if its somewhere between 40-50 degrees to prevent overheating.

Another thing to consider is wearing layers. This works for gloves, too. If you’re unsure how well (or how poorly) your hands will respond to the cold, you can wear a base layer with a thicker glove or mitten on top. Again, keep in mind that if you need to take a layer off, you’ll then be responsible for carrying it around for the rest of your route. There is some other great cold weather running tips here.

Running Gloves Vs. Running Mittens

This is where personal preference, as well as temperature, come into play. For some people, mittens provide extra warmth for the extra cold days because your fingers are together, creating warmth. On the flip side, others don’t like the bulky feel of running in mittens.

How Important is Touch Screen Compatibility?

Most of the gloves that made our list are touchscreen compatible as that’s the norm these days. As far as how important that feature is, it’s highly dependent on each individual. If you’re someone who brings their phone along on their runs and often sends texts, changes music or checks emails while jogging, you’ll enjoy the fact that you can do all that without taking your gloves off and stopping. That said, if you’re someone who leaves the phone behind, you don’t necessarily need a pair that has this feature, although it won’t hurt any if you do.

Final Thoughts

For serious runners, the weather bears little weight on whether or not to lace up and head out the door. If you’re one of those people who run in all weather conditions, you’ll need a great pair of running gloves. We hope you’ll find a pair on our list that keeps your hands toasty while you chase that runner’s high!
